podcast project part 1: An area of media that interests me

An area of media that interests me:

An area of media that I'm interested in is the production within film side of media more specifically directing and cinematography to help create a piece of work.

  • Examples of roles within film production include:
  • Producer. This person is essentially the group leader and is responsible for managing the production from start to finish.
  • Director. The director is primarily responsible for overseeing the shooting and assembly of a film.
  • Screenwriter.
  • Production Designer.
  • Art Director.
  • Costume Designer
  • Cinematographer.
  • Editor.

This is quite a difficult area to get into especially as it has a growing popularity with people to look up to such as Edgar wright and Stephen Spielberg and Christopher Nolan. A good way to somewhat get your foot in the door for that industry is beginner jobs such as being a runner or small assisting roles to show interest in that side of media and build up a portfolio of skills and abilities that could lead to promotions or jobs involving more responsibility.

But to even get that far requires you to show eagerness and to have a level of understanding and working skill to put you above the rest of the crowd. And to show you would be best fit for the role as once again it is very competitive. Some companies, as they know how competitive these types of roles are, offer similar jobs but as volunteering to help people showcase their talents and help them get that first glimpse of working on that side of the industry.

Luckily for beginner jobs such as running you don't often have to have any necessary qualifications but companies often prefer people to have passes in English and maths GCSEs as a baseline understanding.

However as you begin to climb the ladder into the film production side of the industry some jobs such as film production and cinematography role do require some qualifications as these jobs become more complex and often come with a big responsibility role as well.

Day-to-day work on roles within film production may vary as whichever project you're working on develops, for example in the early stages of film production a lot of it is about planning and being organised even with small tasks like asking for permission to shoot somewhere which may be private land or helping decide lighting set ups for different shots.
